Biography

Louis Marquis has over 30 years’ experience in mediation and arbitration. He is bilingual and has practised in both Québec and abroad. He is a mediator and arbitrator, certified by the Institut de médiation et d’arbitrage du Québec (IMAQ). His extensive knowledge as a mediator and arbitrator are complemented by his investigation expertise. He serves as a alternative dispute resolution advisor for PRDSA.

On December 9, 2019, the Université de Sherbrooke board of directors confirmed the appointment of Mr. Marquis as dean of the Faculty of Law. From 2005 to 2009, he was a member of the university’s senior management team, serving as secretary general, vice-rector of the university community and vice-rector of international relations.

He was deeply involved in international development projects on legislative and judicial reform, spearheaded by such noteworthy organizations as USAID, CIDA, the World Bank and the European Union. The countries where these projects have had a major impact include Benin, Senegal, Mali, Madagascar, France, Belgium, Morocco, Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Uganda.

Mr. Marquis also developed several legal training projects, notably in alternative dispute resolution. He is the founder and first ADR program director at the Faculty of Law of the Université de Sherbrooke, and his significant contributions to growing this discipline in Québec and around the world are widely acknowledged.

Throughout his career, he has maintained his rigour, capacity to innovate and dedication to his field. The Québec Bar conferred him the title of Avocat émérite (Ad. E.), as well as presented him with the 2016 Mérite Award. He has an LLM from Cambridge and a PhD from UBC and has served as dean, secretary general and vice-rector in Ontario and Québec.

He also wrote Droit de la prévention et du règlement des différends (PRD): Principes et fondements (Éditions RDUS, 2015) and was a co-editor of New Developments in Civil and Commercial Mediation – Global Comparative Perspectives (Springer, 2015).
